Whether it be bread or pasta or potatoes, I just don't feel satisfied unless I have had carbs. I eat them when I'm bored just because they are there. Please help xx
Thanks for your query! It’s quite common not to feel full without carbs, which after all are bulky and filling. For this reason, most non-faddy healthy eating plans actually recommend that we eat them at every meal.
The problem is when you’re craving them all the time and find it hard to control how many you eat. Some researchers say craving carbs might be down to the eating habits and food / comfort associations you learnt when you were young. Other researchers think that carb cravings are an attempt to increase serotonin levels, which in turn makes you feel calmer and happier.
Whatever is driving your urge to eat them, the dangerous thing for you is the fact that you turn to then when you’re bored! One thing that might help is to write a reminder list of “distraction” activities you can do to keep you occupied (other than eating!), and to pin it prominently to the fridge!
Keeping your blood sugar even can also help to curb carb cravings, and the best way to do this is to make at least half of the carbs you eat wholegrain – such as wholemeal bread or whole-wheat pasta. Always combining carbs with protein also helps to keep you fuller – so top potatoes with protein filings (like tuna), put chicken in your sarnies and so on (I’m sure you get the idea!)
Finally to avoid ruining your diet, never guesstimate carb portions – weighing before you add into your diary will help prevent mistakes!
I hope this helps!
Best wishes
Angela
