Q.

Weight loss stopped and feeling bloated....

HELP...In the first 12 days of this diet I lost 8lbs but it seems to have come to a grinding halt...... I feel very BLOATED.
I stick well within my targets, usually by about 150 cals and lots of fat units.
But I never reach the 8 glasses of water. A friend suggested it could be because I eat a lot of bananas or because I am not drinking enough.
PLEASE HELP. I am beginning to get so down heartened.

My fluid intake is usually about 5 glasses and that includes my mugs of tea throughout the day.

Our expert says...

Hi,

Well, I'm so glad that you have written in, rather than give up, as you have got off to a great start. It just sounds like you have lost your way a bit.

Your bloating is most likely due to your change in diet, particularly if you are eating a lot more fruit and veg than you used to. This can happen when you start to eat a lot of beans and pulses too. Sometimes our bodies need time to get used to a change in diet, by slowly implementing any changes. You mention that you are eating a lot of bananas, but it is better to eat a variety of fruit (or any food) rather than loads of one type, as this ensures that you get a broader spread of nutrients. Also, if one food is causing a digestive problem, such as bloating, the more you eat the worse the problem will become.

So, I would encourage you to take your diet back to basics. Make sure each meal contains some lean protein and complex carbohydrates and have some good fat each day, in the form of nuts, seeds, oily fish or olive oil. Vary your foods and eliminate any you think may be causing bloating to see if this helps. I would also only eat fruit in between meals, not after a meal, as fruit is quickly digested and may produce gas in your stomach if eaten directly after a meal.

Water helps most processes in the body, so it is a good idea to increase the amount you drink. Again, drink water away from meals if possible. While ordinary tea and coffee do provide fluid, it is far preferable to switch to caffeine-free fruit and herbal teas, so you may want to try those.

Here are some other general tips that may help:

? Avoid any fizzy drinks

? Eat slowly

? Eat breakfast within an hour of waking

? Try to eat something every 3 hours, even if it is only a healthy snack

? 5 small meals a day are better than 3 large meals

? Chew food thoroughly to a paste

? Try not to eat under stressful conditions

I hope there is something helpful in my answer. Don?t be downhearted ? you now have some ideas to try to get you back on track!
