A colleague at work has suggested to try not eating proteins with carbs. i.e. eat rice, pasta, bread with vegetables and salads. Eat meat with veg and salad, but no carbs, but they can be mixed on the same day. I would like your opionion on this please. Angelina
Your colleague is making reference to food combining, sometimes known as the hay diet (after Dr Hay, who invented it). It would be more apt to call it food separating as you don’t eat certain foods together.
The idea is that you never eat proteins (e.g. meat) and starches (e.g. potatoes) at the same meal. Advocates say this puts less strain on the digestive system and can help you lose weight more easily.
However there’s no scientific evidence to suggest that separating “foods that fight” offers any more benefits over a normal healthy diet. Most nutritionists argue that all foods are composites of protein, carbohydrate and fat any way, and that our digestive systems are perfectly designed to cope with this.
It can be slightly obsessive which could generate an unhealthy attitude to food. That said there’s no harm to it and cutting calories tends to be a side effect of this diet which is why it helps with weight loss (it’s been shown that we're less likely to overeat if we have a restricted variety of foods on offer at one time). I’d give it a miss, but if you want to try it out, feel free.
I hope this helps.
