I have a fatty liver problem and am now on a diet to reverse this situation. The doctor mentioned that juicing could be a good idea as the intake of vitamins and minerals administered quickly to the body will have a good affect. Do you agree with this and will digesting carrots, apples etc in this way affect weight loss...should I add a carrot, apple etc into my diary?
Hi
It's good that you are on a diet to sort out your fatty liver. And good to know that simply losing weight can help to make the problem much better!
I would imagine that your doctor meant that by juicing fruit and veg you can get more vitamins and minerals into a smaller volume, which is true, but juices can also be more calorie-laden because quite simply where you would be eating and feeling satisfied on just one piece of whole fruit you may be having 3 or 4 (or more) in juice.
I would say that juicing isn't essential and that just getting your 5-a-day, along with plenty of whole grains, lean unprocessed proteins and low fat dairy products is fine. Either way, the critical thing is to put everything into your diary. Remember also that commercial juice (as opposed to liquidised / crushed whole fruit) is low in fibre content, which is one thing that counts against it.
If you need more advice do let us know. If you search for 'fatty liver' in the Ask the Nutritionist forum you will find that we have already touched on this subject.
Hope this helps.
