Q.

I am diabetic and gaining weight - why?

Hiya. I am a type 1 diabetic and I have started to gain weight and I'm not sure why? I have been following the calorie counting and exercising the required amount (usually over) and I have put on 4 lbs in a week!!

I'm really upset because I have been really strict with myself and I'm just confused as to why I'm gaining weight. I would appreciate your thoughts. Many thanks [cry]

A.

Our expert says...

Please don't despair just yet!

Weight loss can be difficult with diabetes, as the normal blood sugar control mechanisms are not working properly. So, anything you can do to help keep your blood sugar levels stable should help to lose weight, as it will help control your appetite and give you energy for exercise.

A low glycaemic index (GI) diet is best for this, which means eating foods that slowly release glucose into the blood stream. This means eating complex carbohydrates in place of white carbohydrates e.g. wholemeal bread, wholegrain pasta and brown rice. These foods also have the added advantage of filling you up more!

Lean protein, plenty of fruit and vegetables, other high fibre foods and healthy fats should also be part of your overall diet. Make sure you eat some protein, however small, at each meal, as this will stabilise blood sugar levels even further.

There are a couple of reasons that are worth looking at, as they may be contributing to your weight gain. When people first embark on this diet, it is easy to forget to enter every little thing in your food diary. You need to be really strict with this, entering all drinks, nibbles, shared foods etc as the calories all add up over the course of the day.

For the same reason, it is really important to weigh and measure everything that you eat too, rather than estimate it. Under-estimating portion size is an easy mistake that many of us make.

So, don't give up yet. Keep going and I'm sure you will soon start to reap the benefits!
