Help - I'm getting nowhere!

I'm getting nowhere - please help!!
Hi I was wondering if you could offer some advice as I seem to be stuck at the weight I am now...I'm eating 1200-1300 calories a day but don't really get to do much exercise. I go swimming once a week and walk for about 30-50 minutes each day. I thought I might lose about 1/2 - 1lb a week doing this but nope not even that...in fact I've gone up 2lbs this week without eating anything out of the ordinary. Really getting me down and feel like throwing the towel in...

Our expert says...

Hi,

Please don?t give up! If you are accurately recording everything that you are eating, and you stay within your calorie and fat targets, you will start to lose weight again.

I think one of the first things to check is that you are recording and weighing absolutely everything, rather than guessing the weight. If you are, it may be that you are stuck in dieter?s rut, eating the same foods everyday. It is always a good idea to try and vary the types of food that you eat, as this will provide a broader range of nutrients and also keep your metabolism working efficiently. And this includes burning up fat!

It may also be worth checking that your diet isn't high in sugar. Sugar is high in calories, with negligible nutritional value, upsets blood sugar levels and excess sugar in the blood is removed from the blood and stored as fat. Many low-fat products are high in sugar and I would avoid them for this reason. Apart from the obvious culprits, like chocolate and biscuits, other foods, such as certain cereal bars and fruit yoghurts, can have a high sugar content. So, I would recommend checking labels and the ingredients list for sugar ? the higher up the list it is, the more it contains! My advice is to try and avoid as much processed food as possible and aim to fill up on your 5 fruit and veg every day.

Finally, it is unlikely that you have gained 2lbs of fat in a week if you have kept within your targets. Your weight gain may be due to something else, such as your hormones or the hot weather, which may be causing you to retain water. Do keep going and I'm sure you will get there!
